Artist Statement
As a photographer, I am interested in creating images
that capture the beauty that I see all around me. I hope that others
are able to see and experience that beauty through my photographs.
I work mostly at night using black & white film or in the daylight
using infrared film. Most of my favorite images have a surreal or
dreamlike quality to them because of these techniques.
The photographer Michael Kenna said, "Beauty
and danger,
that about sums it up for me." That particular
quote rings very true for me. I love the feeling of shooting in darkness
and the feeling of shooting something that is not 'supposed' to be
shot. There are not many greater thrills for me than capturing a special
image and then having to, somehow, escape from somewhere with my camera
and film intact.
Although my images are a representation of reality
- the reality that I see through the lens - there is usually something
lying just below the surface. I think that a good photograph should
have an element of mystery to it. Hopefully, that sense of mystery
will cause the viewer to think or at least to take a closer look.
I see a sense of underlying calm in a chaotic world and I hope that
viewers of my work can sense that calm as well.
